Terrorists kill many captives in Nigeria
Local government chairman Mannir Haidara Kaura confirmed that the victims were part of a group of 56 people kidnapped earlier this year. The BBC reported the abductions took place in March.
“We have taken the remaining 18 survivors to hospital for treatment and plan to visit the families of those who were killed,” Kaura said.
A villager named Ibrahim Banga told Channels Television that 53 people were seized during the bandit raid, with kidnappers demanding roughly $660 per person. After weeks of effort, the community raised the ransom and freed 18 hostages. However, those released revealed that the kidnappers had executed the other 35 captives during their captivity.
Zamfara authorities condemned the “inhuman killings” and vowed to dismantle the terrorist groups responsible for these brutal acts. Governor Dauda Lawal declared, “The government will not rest until every criminal involved is caught or neutralized.”
The state has introduced measures such as deploying Community Protection Guards to boost rapid response and intelligence efforts amid ongoing security challenges.
Kidnappings by criminal gangs and terrorist groups have long plagued Nigeria, drawing international concern, especially after the 2014 Boko Haram abduction of schoolgirls in Borno State. In March 2024, over 130 children and staff were kidnapped in Kaduna State but were rescued by the military shortly after.
